Jose Contreras-Ruiz
My
name is Jose Contreras-Ruiz and I am a dermatologist in Mexico City with
a special interest in wound care, education and research. I did enjoy
the sessions on Wound Care in Developing Countries, it was very interesting
to notice that one is not alone out there and that there are people who
care. As you know from my intervention after Terence Ryan talked we do
(I believe) a lot with very little. Our resources are scarce, corruption
and inefficacy are always present and the population suffers with these
and other cancers very much present in Mexico.
As for my CV, I studied most of my life in Mexico City, I spent my high
school junior year in Bloomfield Hills Michigan (Cranbrook Kingswood Schools)
and then went back to Mexico. My medical school I did at La Salle University's
Faculty of Medicine.
My pre-graduate internship I spent at the University of Miami's Jackson
Memorial Hospital. After that I spent a year doing research under the
tutorship of Ramon Ruiz Maldonado at the National Institute of Paediatrics.
I did one year of internal medicine at the "Angeles del Pedregal"
Hospital and then dermatology at the National University of Mexico "Dr
Manuel Gea Gonzalez" General Hospital. It was during those last years
that I perceived the need for humane treatment of patients with ulcers
who are usually the most underserved of the patients that visit our clinic.
I decided to dedicate my life to the field and have since been doing wound
care, wound care education and research. I currently breed my own maggots
and help others around the country in doing the same. Since May 2004 and
until July 2005 I will be working with Dr. RG Sibbald in Toronto doing
a wound care fellowship. I am also a graduate of the International Interdisciplinary
Wound Care Course.
My country and where I plan to go back to work is Mexico. I have both
private and public practice in Mexico City.
